Matthew 11:1~14 (마태복음 11:1~14)

1 After Jesus had finished instructing his disciples,

he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.

1 예수께서 열 두 제자에게 명하시기를 마치시고

이에 저희 여러 동네에서 가르치시며 전도하시려고 거기를 떠나가시니라 

2 When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent disciples 

2 요한이 옥에서 그리스도의 하신 일을 듣고 제자를 보내어

 

3 to ask him, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?"

3 예수께 여짜오되 오실 그이가 당신이오니이까 우리가 다른 이를 기다리오리이까

the one who was to come : '오시기로 예정된 그 분'이며

was to come 은 'be to + 동사의 원형'의 구문으로 여기서는 '예정/미래'의 의미

(참고) 'be to + 동사의 원형 : 의무(must), 가능(can), 예정(will/shall), 소원(wish to), 운명(be destined to ~) 등의 뜻

4 Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see:

4 예수께서 대답하여 가라사대 너희가 가서 듣고 보는 것을 요한에게 고하되

5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear,

the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

5 소경이 보며 앉은뱅이가 걸으며 문둥이가 깨끗함을 받으며 귀머거리가 들으며

죽은 자가 살아나며 가난한 자에게 복음이 전파된다 하라

6 Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me." 

6 누구든지 나를 인하여 실족하지 아니하는 자는 복이 있도다 하시니라

on account of ~ : ~ 때문에, ~을 인하여

7 As John's disciples were leaving Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind?

7 저희가 떠나매 예수꼐서 무리에게 요한에 대하여 말씀하시되 너희가 무엇을 보려고 광야에 나갔더냐 바람에 흔들리는 갈대냐

sway : 흔들(리)다, 지배하다

reed : 갈대

8 If not what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in king's palace.

8 그러면 너희가 무엇을 보려고 나갔더냐 부드러운 옷 입은 사람이냐 부드러운 옷을 입은 자들은 왕궁에 있느니라

If not : If you did not go out to see a reed swayed by the wind의 뜻

9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell yo, and more than a prophet.

9 그러면 너희가 어찌하여 나갔더냐 선지자를 보려더냐 옳다 내가 너희에게 이르노니 선지자보다 나은 자니라

more than a prophet : you went out to see more than a prophet의 의미

10 This is the one about whom it is written " ' I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'

10 기록된바 보라 내가 내 사자를 네 앞에 보내노니 저가 네 길을 네 앞에 예비하리라 하신 것이 이사람에 대한 말씀이니라

 ahead of ~ : ~보다 앞서, ~보다 먼저 

11 I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

11 내가 진실로 너희에게 말하노니 여자가 낳은 자 중에 세례 요한보다 큰 이가 일어남이 없도다 그러나 천국에서는 극히 작은 자라도 저보다 크니라 

Among those ~ John the Baptist는 There has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist among those born of women의 도치구문

born of women : of는 out of (~로 부터)의 의미

12 From the days of John the Baptist untill now, the kingdom of heaven is forcefully advancing,

and forceful men lay hold of it. 

12 세례 요한의 때부터 지금까지 천국은 침노를 당하나니 침노하는 자는 빼앗느니라

forcefully :  힘으로 강하게

advanve : (적을 향해) 진격하다

13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied untill John.

13 모든 선지자와 율법의 예언한 것이 요한까지니

prophesy : 예언하다, 예측하다, 예보하다

14 And if you are willing to accept, he is the Elijah who was to come.  

14 만일 너희가 즐겨 받을찐대 오리라 한 엘리야가 곧 이 사람이니라

be willing to + 동사의 원형 : 기꺼이 ~하다
